Gospel Class

What is the Gospel Class?

The Gospel Class is the foundational discovery course of Crossroads Church. It’s here that you will learn what the Crossroads is all about. You’ll learn what we believe about God and Christianity and how we put that understanding into practice. We’ve structured the class as a basic doctrinal survey where the very essentials of what it is to be a Christian are taught. The included topics are Scripture, God, Creation, Sin, Salvation, and the Church. Within this context and out of our biblical theology, however, you’ll discover what our values and practical mission are as a church. We’ll cover things like money, spiritual gifts, leadership structure, and what it means to be Crossroads on mission in Morgantown.

Who should take Gospel Class?

The Gospel Class is open to everyone. If it’s your first week at Crossroads Church, if you believe in Jesus or not, this introductory class is a great place to get started for those who are merely curious and for those who are excited to get connected.

We ask that everyone considering Crossroads to be their church home take this class to assess how they feel about God, the Gospel, and what we believe, praying for discernment and growth as they choose a local body of believers to call their family.

What is Membership?

“So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith.” (Galatians 6:10)

“So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God” (Ephesians 2:19)

From your Sam’s Club Card to your Blockbuster Video card, membership in our culture is loosely held and casually broken. It’s helpful to begin by defining what it means to be a member at Crossroads Church.

Membership is a covenant between passionate followers of Jesus Christ and the leadership of Crossroads Church.

This commitment goes two ways. Should you choose to become a member, you are acknowledging your desire to be held to a higher degree of responsibility by church leadership. In choosing to become a member, you are also receiving the promise of counsel, service, aid, prayer, teaching, and guidance from the leadership.

Membership is not a status symbol; there are no select parking spaces or special t- shirts. You should not enter into a membership covenant simply because you’ve been around for a while, or because “Crossroads is my church.” Rather, membership is an informed and intentional commitment to the doctrine and vision of Crossroads Church, a willing submission to the leadership of the church, and a passionate pursuit of your role in the Body of Christ and the mission of the church.

Why Commit to a Local Church?

Growth is a community project.

No one will ever grow in the church if they leave as soon as things get difficult.
Crossroads church is committed to making passionate followers of Jesus

Christ. This means that at times you will be challenged by things you hear from the pulpit or across a table. Sometimes you will be called to step out of your comfort zone. Sometimes decisions will be made that don’t line up with your preferences.

If you are only dating the church without commitment or contribution, you may be tempted to move on as soon as the newness fades and things get uncomfortable. But, just like in a marriage covenant, growth happens when we stay true to our commitment, address sin and conflict, and allow ourselves to be challenged and transformed. That’s where sanctification happens. That’s where disciples are forged. That’s where real joy and authentic community is found.

You have an important role to play.

When a person trusts the person and works of Jesus Christ they receive the Holy Spirit and are brought into the church. Every person is called to participate, promote, and serve the message of the gospel with other believers

“For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one bodyJews or Greeks, slaves or freeand all were made to drink of one Spirit. For the body does not consist of one member but of many. If the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” that would not make it any less a part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would be the sense of hearing? If the whole body were an ear, where would be the sense of smell? But as it is, God arranged the members in the body, each one of them, as he chose. If all were a single member, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, yet one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I have no need of you,” nor again the head to the feet, “I have no need of you.” On the contrary, the parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and on those parts of the body that we think less honorable we bestow the greater honor, and our unpresentable parts are treated with greater modesty, which our more presentable parts do not require. But God has so composed the body, giving greater honor to the part that lacked it, that there may be no division in the body, but that the members may have the same care for one another. If one member suffers, all suffer together; if one member is honored, all rejoice together. Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.” (Romans 12:3-8).

We are committed to equipping members to do the work of Jesus in this church and in this city (Eph. 2:10, 4:12). God has placed each one of us in Morgantown in order to engage and influence the city with the gospel. The mission advances only when all parts of the body come together and commit to sacrifice and serve in covenant relationship together. Becoming a part of Crossroads means giving your life to Jesus Christ, members of this church, and your community as a powerful force for the Kingdom. It’s what God desires for us and from us.

To transition from a guest to a member at Crossroads Church, we ask that you attend these foundational Gospel classes, where we will look at an overview of Christian essentials and how we live in light of these doctrines. This is more than a survey of beliefs. Content includes an overview of the Gospel, the Church, culture, and how these practically play out in our lives, both individually and corporately.
